If you're wondering about something that isn't here, you're welcome to get in touch.
What is Hakomi, really?
Hakomi is a mindful, body-centred form of psychotherapy developed by Ron Kurtz in the 1970s. It uses mindfulness and gentle experiments to help people notice the unconscious beliefs and patterns they live inside, so that those patterns can be felt, understood, and, in time, updated. You don't need any meditation experience to take part.
Are you a registered therapist?
No. I'm a Hakomi graduate trained to Advanced Clinical Skills level (more than 600 hours, including client practice and supervision). I am working toward being a Hakomi Certified Therapist. I currently work as a Hakomi-informed practitioner and coach, which means I'm not yet a registered psychotherapist or counsellor in Aotearoa. I'm careful about my scope of practice and will always refer on when something falls outside of it.
Is this coaching or therapy?
In practice the two overlap more than most people think. If you're after goal-focused, action-forward support — we'll lean into the coaching end. If you're wanting to move slowly and work with what's underneath — we'll lean into the Hakomi end. Most sessions travel between the two. We'll talk about what you're looking for in your first session.
How many sessions will I need?
There's no right number. Some people come for a single session to meet something specific; others find the six-session arc gives them enough rhythm to go somewhere real. Most meaningful change unfolds over a few months rather than a few weeks, and we'll review regularly so you're in charge of how long we work together.
What happens in a first session?
We'll spend some time getting to know each other, talking about what's brought you, what you're hoping for, and what I can (and can't) offer. I'll invite you to slow down, notice your experience in the moment, and together we'll start exploring what's alive for you. You are always in charge of the pace.
Is it confidential?
Yes. What we discuss stays between us, with the usual legal and ethical exceptions (risk of serious harm to yourself or others, child safety concerns, legal subpoena). I receive ongoing clinical supervision to support the quality of my work; in supervision your identity is never shared.
Cancellations?
Life happens. I ask for 24 hours' notice for reschedules. Sessions cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice are charged in full, except in genuine emergencies.
Recordings
As I am working toward being a Hakomi Certified Therapist, I would appreciate if I could film our sessions. These recordings would be used and seen by my supervisors, and won't be seen by any other person. If you agree, I'll ask you to complete a form which outlines how the recordings will be stored, viewed, and destroyed. If you are not comfortable, then that's completely fine, and will in no way change our sessions.
